Memphis missed four out of five freethrows in that span, which would have put the championship out of theJayhawks reach. The strategy paid off, allowing Mario Chalmers, thetournament's Most Outstanding Player, to make what Kansas coach Bill Selfcalled "probably the biggest shot ever made in Kansas history."
With 10.8 seconds remaining in the game, trailing by three points and withno time outs remaining, the Jayhawks quickly ran down the floor. SherronCollins handed the ball off to Chalmers at the top of the 3-point line, whodrained the heavily defended shot with 2.1 seconds remaining to tie the gameat 63, forcing overtime. During the overtime period, the Kansas momentumproved too much for Memphis, and the Jayhawks cruised to the nationalchampionship.
